Called To Coach with Richard Sterry

Gallup Called To Coach Richard SterryJim Collison kindly invited me on Called To Coach to talk about my coaching in a church environment and show off Cascade. Thank you to those who listened live for your support, it was a wonderful experience. We covered the Strengths Twins initiative and the benefits of finding someone who shares the same top 5 themes.

The official session is now available here with a transcript. You can jump to the different parts of the conversation.

I Bring / I Need Report

Cascade bring need report strengthsfinder theme contributions Exploring the wider dimensions of the themes, the I Bring / I Need report in Cascade provides deeper insights. It can help people resonate with their themes and take them to new levels of understanding.

The contributions on the left of the page provide a range of aspects which the theme brings. These can be real confidence boosters, empowering people to ‘own’ their theme. The Learner® theme includes ‘Courage when venturing into the unknown’ which helped me enormously when I left full-time employment and set up my own business.

On the right is a list of the energisers supplying the needs of the theme. Help your client interpret these into relevant activities. For example, my Relator® needs ‘Opportunities for one on one interactions’. I therefore feed my Relator theme by scheduling several online chats and having coffees with friends.

Providing the needs for the themes will increase motivation and enable the theme to thrive. As a manager, this report for each person in the team is like gold dust. If they focus on providing the needs of their staff, the contributions will follow.

Karen Weigel from Cultivate 2 Conquer in Alexandria MN, US writes.

“I use Bring/Need as a learning tool when talking to clients about balconies and basements. It is a valuable tool in teaching them how to turn up, or turn down their strengths, depending on their audience!

In a team setting, we focus first on the BRING side. The team members pick a strength they love and then share what greatness they BRING to the table. The BRING portion drives home each member’s excellence, what makes them a rock star, what beautiful unique value they add. I make them form a complete sentence that encompasses what makes them unique and special.

Then we move to the NEED portion. In a team setting, we focus on each person’s role in the team and how what they NEED is an important part of them using their strengths most effectively. When the team knows what each member needs, they begin to understand their HOW. The Need portion is what we use for examples of how someone’s actions may be mistakenly devalued, misinterpreted, or viewed as a weakness. The discussions around this are magnificent, they sometimes share an irritant, that now knowing the NEED, has resolved. Or they learn a new area where they can use someone more productively, where their talents would shine more brightly based on that individual’s NEEDS.

The BRING represents the balconies and the NEED represents basements (meaning that they can be misinterpreted).”

Labels & Lanyards

StrengthsFinder theme print name tags badge lanyard labels cascade spreadsheetWorkshops and seminars are not complete without name badges or lanyards. They increase your professionalism and provide a corporate identity. The Labels page in Cascade can print a wide range of labels to suit a variety of templates. Create a one page Top 5 certificate, two corporate lanyards or up to 16 badge labels on a page.

Design the header and footer to top and tail the participant’s name and their top 5 themes. Once set up there is no mailmerging required, you can print directly from Cascade.

A recent enhancement in Cascade version 2.0r01d increases the label combinations on each page. There can now be 1 or 2 labels across and up to 8 labels going down the page. The Bonus Pack enables a feature to hide the surname for more informal workshops. It can also add a team name to the footer of the label, which is helpful when dividing the participants into groups.

More information to create your own labels is available here. Some of the set up can be a bit tricky. Focus on the paper size and label dimensions before designing the format for each label. If you get stuck or need help, please contact us.

Marie-Hélène Langlois at RCP | Coaching | Conseils RH in Canada writes.

Marie Helene Name Frame top 5 strengths themes

“The Labels page really helped us making our personalized picture frames and name tags for our workshops. This feature in Cascade made it much easier and faster for us to prepare for small and large groups, compared to what we used before.
The content generates itself from the main page, and we only need to enter the measurements once, which saves us precious time, every time!!”

Cascade Connection – Issue 3

Cascade connection news letter tips help advice support communityWelcome to the third edition of the Cascade Connection. A special welcome to our new readers this month, particularly several from Texas and Florida. I hope you all find something here of interest.
Here we look at a report to enhance conversations about collaboration and overcoming conflict. We see what is happening with the Strengths Twins and we also share a special event on 1st May.

April 2018

The Power of 2

Improving collaboration and resolving conflicts often feature in coaching conversations. Here we discuss some practical steps to help two people increase their effectiveness when working together.

power of 2 Strengthsfinder compare top 5 theme pairs Cascade collaboration strengths conflict

The Power of 2 worksheet in Cascade is a simple matrix with one person’s themes across the top and another person’s themes down the side.

The points of discussion come at the intersection of the two themes. Explore how the themes can enhance each other so together they can make the result exceptional. It is a bit like 1 + 1 = 11. The online book Expanding Your Strengths provides suggestions for powerful partnerships.

Conversely, how can the two themes rub against each other and appear to be pulling in opposite directions? It is all about appreciating the differences each theme can bring. Consider the intensity of each theme relative to the specific situation.

This concept can help a manager understand each person in their team better. Outside the workplace, share this with a married couple to help strengthen their relationship.

Facilitating Conversations

Alicia Santamaria, a conflict resolution expert in San-Francisco writes “There have been times in my coaching and team facilitation, where two people (colleagues or supervisor/direct report) have benefitted from dedicated time talking together about their particular partnership. Cascade’s Power of 2 matrix is a simple but powerful tool to use to structure this strengths-based conversation. Several clients have expressed gratitude for having this resource to help them self-facilitate their partnership conversation. As a result of the conversation and time spent understanding each other’s strengths, they are working even more cohesively together.”

Alicia has created an activity guide to accompany Cascade’s Power of 2 worksheet. You can see her guide here.

Measuring Effectiveness

Power of 2 review worksheet conversations PDF Strengthsfinder Cascade compare theme

Deon Rademeyer from Australia has kindly produced a checklist to identify the effectiveness of a partnership. It helps to highlight the areas working well and what needs to improve. It can also show up an imbalance of understanding between the two people.

Use the review to provide a clear benchmark at the outset of a conversation. Have each person complete the review independently, then compare notes. At the end of the coaching process, use it again to demonstrate a tangible measure of improvement.

Command® vs Harmony®.

Pippa Shaper a Strengths Coach in South Africa shares a recent coaching session with a business owner and his PA. She writes “Amongst the Cascade tools I used with them both was the Power of 2, to help explain how they could celebrate the strengths they shared in common, as well as see the huge possibilities arising from some of their other strengths, which were quite different.

The business owner has Command® as a theme in his top five, whilst his PA has Harmony® and Restorative®. Rather than regarding these particular strengths as strange and foreign in each other, the Power of 2 enabled them to see how Harmony and Restorative can solve problems and settle disagreements within the team when the business owner’s Command could have been a lot blunter and to the point! She was also able to see that the directness of Command could be very useful to take control of a situation when all else had failed to try and smooth things over with consensus.

Through the use of colour on the Power of 2 page, they were both able to see that the ‘boss’, being strong in the Strategic Thinking and Influencing domain, was wonderfully balanced by his PA’s strength in the Executing and Relationship domains. This session gave them both a new appreciation for the other, knowing now what strengths they should be ‘borrowing’ from each other as and when needed.”

Cascade Connection – Issue 2

Cascade Connection – Issue 2

Cascade connection news letter tips help advice support communityWelcome to the second edition of the Cascade Connection. We have lots of new readers this month and I hope you find something of interest. We look at one report which is growing in Australia, a creative way to discuss team dynamics and we delve into some new features of the Team Grid. Oh yes, we also have a special announcement if you make it to the end.

March 2018

Team Summary

Cascade strengths summary report Deon Rademeyer SydneyThe Team Summary report, available in the Bonus Pack, provides a quick overview of the theme distribution for a team. This is one of the more popular reports in Cascade which includes the Theme Frequency and the Cascade Spark charts. Identifying the team’s top 5 themes it reveals the top motivators and contributions the team can bring. If you work with several teams who know each other, comparing the Team Summary report for each team will help to show how they differ.

Deon Rademeyer in Sydney went one stage further with his workshop, he printed the Team Summary report in A2 size (420 x 594 mm or 16.5 x 23.4 in) for all to see. What do you do with your reports to make them special for your customers?

Team Dynamics in Conversation

Cascade strengths reports for Kathie Gautille workshopIn a recent workshop, Kathie Gautille shared her range of handouts for the participants. The impressive array of reports added to the professionalism of her workshop.

Kathie writes “I always feel like a hero when participants understand the team dynamics better after using the instruments from Cascade. I have two activities I love to do with the reports and after this workshop, I found another way.

I ask each small group to use the Team Grid to analyze the various talent themes and domains that are represented in the room. But this time I had one group with that particular assignment — the rest of the groups were to take their own small group and identify the same information — what domain is most frequent, what is less frequent in your group, what’s missing, that sort of questioning.

After we do that exercise, the next exercise I give them a hypothetical project and the questioning I use hits all four domains to help identify the various people in their team that would be good at say communicating, detail planning or building cohesive collaborative effort’s etc.

I don’t know that I could do this activity without Cascade. What I really love are all the aha moments because I can tell each participant or most participants are completely embracing Clifton Strengths.”

Team Grid

strengthsfinder Cascade strengths reports team grid menu show themesThe Team page in Cascade has received a few updates over recent weeks to help customise the page. Often when printing or inserting a screen clip into PowerPoint, it is helpful to hide unused columns for clarity or make the some of the columns a bit wider. The new menu provides easy options to adjust the screen.

Make the Team Grid you own and insert your logo or the logo for your client. You don’t have to live with the image of the people sitting at the table.

Domain Order

We specifically place the domains for the Team Grid in the order of Strategic Thinking, Influencing, Relationship Building and Executing. When introducing the domains and how they fit together, this order provides a natural flow. To hear more, the synergy between the domains is explained more in the 4 Leadership Domains article.

Refreshing Recovery

The Team page with all its features is the most complicated page in Cascade. Very occasionally it may go horribly wrong or it could have been subject to some over-enthusiastic resizing of the rows/columns. Please don’t panic, there is a button ‘Refresh Page’ that will restore order. This recreates the page, resetting it back to its original state. You won’t lose any data, it simply updates over twenty thousand cells with the right formulae and formatting. It can also recover an issue if some names are not appearing in the other reports.

Printing Perfection

The Team Grid has the potential to print 17 pages or 64 pages if you have the Go Large module. To print the relevant pages for your desired team without the endless blank pages, here are a couple of options.

In the heading for the Name column, click on the drop-down arrow to reveal the data filtering choices, then untick zzBlanks. The blank rows will disappear and the number of pages to print will reduce down to 1 or 2.

Another way is to use the Print Preview button on the new menu. This hides any blank rows before viewing the page to print. (A recent update in v2.0r01c corrects a small issue with this button).

The big news at Releasing Strengths is the completion of a Licence Agreement with Gallup for Cascade. Following a successful demonstration of Cascade to Gallup Executives, they said they really like it and it is perfect for their licensing program. After several months of negotiation, the licence is agreed and Cascade is back on the road.
We now look forward to promoting Cascade to a wider audience so together we can work with coaches like you and enhance the strengths movement.

New Frontiers

Cascade is breaking new boundaries with two firsts. It is the first digital third-party product licensed by Gallup, and it is the first licence awarded to the UK. Both aspects added complications to the Licence Agreement and we are delighted to pioneer new ways forward.
