Cascade Connection -Issue 13

Cascade connection theme insights discovery cardsHow do you Build Teams?

Bringing two teams together can be a challenge. This month we hear how the visual reports in Cascade can focus the conversations around team strengths. We also show how to select teams in the Team Grid and we have more information about the new version of Cascade.

Combining Team Strengths

Cheryl Pace is a Gallup-certified coach and Director of Organizational Improvement at The University of Kansas Medical Center. She helps employees and students understand their natural talents and how they use them to achieve the goals of the team they work on and/or achieve success in the careers they are developing.  Cheryl describes how Cascade helps her communicate better with both teams and individuals.

“I recently worked with a new department composed of two separate departments that had been combined into one.  Before the team session, I was able to meet with each individual team member to be sure they understood their CliftonStrengths® assessment results.  The Theme Insights and Bring-Need reports in Cascade add so much value to these conversations.  And everyone loves getting a Name Tent!  The highlight of the team session was being able to show Team Grids and Team Summaries for each of the departments before they combined and then to do the same for the combined team.  There were a lot of “a-ha” moments.

compare combine team strengths Cascade report chart theme frequency
Combined Team Strengths (left), Individual Team Strengths (middle & right)

In addition to the reports generated by Cascade, I was also able to take parts of reports and show them side by side to help the new department gain insights into their differences and similarities.  I’ve included one that I created comparing just the frequency reports.  Looking at this comparison generated a rich discussion about how the combined teams have more talent themes to leverage to achieve success.  A picture can be worth a thousand words.  I don’t believe our discussion would have been as productive and meaningful without Cascade!”

Team Summary

Cascade team summary report Gallup strengths themes

Comparing the Summary reports for several teams reveals visual differences in the distribution of their strengths. In addition to seeing variations across the Domains, there may be differences in the spread and intensity of the themes.

We covered articulating the strengths of a team with
Traci McCausland last month in Issue 12.

Team Selection

Cascade can provide a central repository for all your client or staff themes. With so many people in the list, how can you easily build teams for the Team Grid and the other reports?

Columns A-D on the left of the Theme Table enable you to group people by different categories. You can change the headings to suit your needs. The example in the first picture shows a matrix of teams across departments and locations.

In the Team Grid, use the filtering to select the people you want to show. Right click on the heading and select Filter, shown in the picture on the right. Select one or more items on the list to build up your Team Grid. You can refine your selection with filters for several columns. You can also sort the list by column to group people together.

Taking this example further, you can select just the Managers or those who work in Finance. The combinations are endless.

If you want to get back and show all the names, click on the Clear Filters button at the top of the Team Grid to reset the selection.

Tip: Performing any sort of selection will remove the additional blank lines at the bottom of the Team Grid. This will save you printing out excessive empty pages.

Katie’s Experience

Katie Christensen owner of Simply Strengths in Minnesota shares how she builds her teams in the Team Grid.

“Beyond the user-friendly nature of Cascade, I appreciate the many nuanced ways it can be applied to the unique groups with which I work.  One of the functions I use often is the “Team” column in the Team Grid.  This allows me to chunk larger groups down into smaller teams and print just that small group’s Team Grid.  For example, if I run a family training with 40 people from 14 different families, giving families a team print out that contains all 40 people would not be helpful.  Families are most interested in seeing how just their family’s unique themes fit together.”

Katie kindly goes on to write “Cascade is technology that has made my life easier and really enhances the work I do.  When I have had an issue there is a huge and active community of users ready to jump in and offer support as well as the amazing Cascade support team.  In fact, since I have been given this platform it seems the perfect time to say thanks to a great network of amazing people and to Cascade for helping us connect to one another and serve our clients better.”

Cascade – New version – Coming Soon!

The new version of Cascade is currently with a group of testers and will be available next month. It contains lots of time-saving features to help you quickly create reports. There is an intuitive Menu to navigate Cascade and access all the reports.

Listening to your comments, hearing your questions and observing how you use Cascade, the new version offers;

  • An easier and more intuitive way to navigate around the pages.
  • A quicker method for creating reports and PDFs.
  • More visually appealing pages, so it looks less like Excel.

Joe Darin from Joe Darin Coaching in Sacramento comments.
“This latest version of Cascade will take my coaching and training to a whole new level. The reports have been refined and the ability to natively run reports for 1-15 Themes is awesome. The updated Theme Insights is very powerful as well, allowing my coaching to either use the Theme Comparisons or Metaphors & Barrier Labels.
I highly recommend this (or any) version of Cascade for strength coaches.”

The new version of Cascade will be out in March 2019.

Cascade connection theme insights discovery cardsWhat do you need to thrive?

As 2019 gets underway, we look at setting the right environment to transform a role and increase confidence. We also find ways to describe the strengths of a team. Finally, what would you do if it all goes horribly wrong?

Confidence Boost

Cascade bring need report strengthsfinder theme contributions motivators confidence

How can you help a client who is feeling demotivated or uncertain about their abilities?

Articulating our strengths in practical ways tells ourselves and others how we can give of our best. The Bring / Need report is one of the most popular reports in Cascade. It shows the top themes for an individual and outlines the main contributions of each theme.

Empowering clients to identify with their abilities increases their confidence in what they can offer. Encouraging them to share these qualities with their colleagues creates opportunities for them to give of their best.

Conversely, each contribution has a need. The right environment is crucial for each contribution to thrive. Being aware and sharing the needs for each theme, builds understanding and the potential for excellence.

Imagine a manager who understands the needs of each person in their team. How much more can the individuals contribute when their needs are recognised and fulfilled?

Renegotiating Your Role

Kim Madsen in Minnesota runs online coaching programs and her regular Coaches Corner chat room. She writes;

“One of my clients in my online group coaching program was being recruited back to her previous job, which she had just left six months prior.  During our coaching sessions, and while using the Cascade tool, she was able to clearly define her motivators and needs.  Which led us to have great coaching sessions to guide her in her decision.  She was able to go back to that employer, ask for everything she needed in order to thrive, and accepted their offer.  Through coaching, she gained a high level of self-awareness around her unique gifts.  The Cascade tool was a great visual support to our coaching sessions.

I also use the Cascade tool with the students I coach.  Triston is an 18-year-old freshman in college.  His mom and dad bought him a coaching session as a Christmas present, with Triston I utilized the Bring-Need report.”

Triston writes “I have learned about who I am written down on paper. It’s been a helpful and positive experience to  know not only what I’m good at, but also how I can use these qualities of mine to be the best Triston I can be.”

Team Perspective

Cascade team summary report Gallup strengths themes

How do you articulate the strengths of a team?

The Team Summary report in Cascade shows a one-page snapshot of the team’s strengths. You can see the distribution and intensity of the CliftonStengths themes for the collective team.

Comparing the Summary reports for several teams reveals visual differences in the distribution of their strengths. In addition to seeing variations across the Domains, there may be differences in the spread and intensity of the themes.

Team Interpretation

Traci McCausland, SOAR Evangelist & Founder of Follow Your Strengths writes;

“The leadership and intact teams I work with absolutely love the Team Summary page of Cascade!  I love that it gives teams a great visual and a starting point for analysis and interpretation of what the team brings and needs.  It’s a great jumping off point for valuable conversations and discussions.  Additionally, I’ve referred numerous clients to Cascade so they can take ownership of their results and have incredible tools at their fingertips!  This not only saves me time from re-running strengths grids when team members change but more importantly, it empowers my clients to go deeper into strengths and that’s what it’s all about!”

Note: The Team Summary report in Cascade requires the Bonus Pack.

What if …?

An alarming number of people are contacting us after their computer has crashed and they have lost a lot of their data. We can supply a blank copy of Cascade but we cannot recover the client information. Depending on the situation, the client themes may be available on the Gallup Strengths Center. It is good practice and common sense, to back up all your essential files.

Use a backup process which is automatic so you don’t have to think about it and secure, so your information is kept safe.

One simple option for your documents and working files is to use cloud storage where there is an off-line copy of your data. Examples are DropBox, Google Docs and iCloud.

What would you do if your laptop crashed?

After the initial panic, how would you recover your files?

We are not a backup solution provider. However, we urge you to take precautions now, so if disaster strikes, you can keep your business running.

Reflecting back in 2018, there are so many things to thank the Cascade Community. Your support and dedication have seen Cascade go much further than we thought possible. We are eternally grateful. Thank you.

Launching under a license with Gallup in January 2018, you responded enthusiastically telling your friends about the Cascade strengths reports. Word is quickly spreading to help other coaches benefit from the visual charts and time-saving features.

As Cascade becomes an everyday tool in the Strengths world, it is an honour to see the reports in conversations, social sites, podcasts and seminars. Here are a few of the highlights from 2018.

Gallup Called To Coach Richard SterryPodcasts

Appearing on Called to Coach in May was quite an experience. Thank you to Jim Collison and his team for being the perfect host. We talked about strengths in a church environment, Strengths Twins and saw a demo of Cascade. It is amazing how many people are watching the replay and contacting us, several months later.

Meeting so many coaches at the Clifton Strengths Summit in July was a wonderful opportunity. With over 100 Cascade advocates, it felt like a real community. You are so much better in person and it was nice to hear your individual stories.

New Reports

Cascade My 34 theme report strengthsfinder chartOver the summer we saw the arrival of the new My 34 Theme report, a one page summary of all 34 themes for a person. Also, the new Theme Advantage worksheet, helping clients take advantage of their themes in various situations.

The feature to create a batch of PDF reports for clients is proving immensely popular and a big bonus for your clients.

Towards the end of the year, we launched new services to help coaches. Whether you just have the PDF Gallup reports or a Team Grid from Gallup Access, we can read these and extract the theme information to drop into Cascade.

Strengths Twins

Clifton Strengths Twins Gallup StrengthsFinder same top 5 themesTicking away in the background is a constant stream of people searching to find their Strengths Twin. Matching individuals every week who share the same top 5 themes is a real privilege. So far, over 260 people have found their ‘Twin’ across 56 different countries. There are Triplets, Quads, a group of Quins and one collection of 11 people sharing the same top 5 themes. We also have 5 pairs who share the same top 5 themes in the same order.

Reflection

What has made 2018 so good? There are a couple of things I have learned in 2018, one is to follow your gut and the other is to embrace the community around you. Be true to your instincts and draw on the expertise and strengths of others. Sharing an African proverb at my daughter’s wedding earlier this year, it says. “Alone I go fast, together we go far.”

Looking forward

Listening to your comments and feedback we have great plans for Cascade. A new version, due out early in 2019, it is more intuitive and easier to use. The reports cover a greater range of themes, there are more options and there is simple one-click printing. Just wait until you see the new Team Grid!

As the Cascade Community grows beyond 600 advocates across 40 countries worldwide, you are all part of something special. Thank you for your support and enthusiasm to share the Cascade word. It is an honour to have so many friends and companions all over the globe.

I look forward to the Clifton Strengths Summit in June 2019 where we can continue to build the strengths movement.

In the meantime have a very Happy Holiday, Happy Chrismas or whatever you say when celebrating this special seasonal time.

Cascade connection theme insights discovery cardsHow do you enter client themes into Cascade?

Welcome to the November edition of the Cascade Connection. This month we launch two new services to make your life easier, we reveal a little more about the new version of Cascade and have a special offer for Black Friday.

When the export file from the Gallup Strengths Center is not available, entering the client themes into Cascade can become very tedious. To help, we are launching two new offerings. They will save you time, reduce the hassle and increase accuracy.

Save Time when Entering Client Themes

enter client themes Gallup PDF spreadsheet cascade strengths reportTaking a Gallup report, we can scan the contents and produce a small spreadsheet with the theme information, ready to paste into Cascade. We have templates for the Strengths Insight Guide, the Theme Sequence Report, the Signature Themes Reports and the new CliftonStrengths® 34 Report.

This is particularly helpful if you are preparing for a workshop where you did not supply the codes for the CSF assessment. Don’t enter the client themes manually, just send us a batch of reports. Let us do the boring bit for you.

The more reports you send, the cheaper the price per person.

Extract Themes from a Gallup Access Team Grid

Team Grid export Gallup Access Excel spreadsheet cascade strengthsSimilarly, we can take a PDF of the Team Grid from Gallup Access and extract the themes for each person. As currently there is no export feature in Gallup Access, this can save a lot of time.

Send us a PDF of the Team Grid and we can return a small spreadsheet with all the themes to paste into Cascade.

More information about The PDF Export and the Team Grid Export services are available in our shop.

CliftonStrengths 34 Report

Cascade My 34 theme report strengthsfinder chartThe new CliftonStrengths 34 Report offers a lot of depth to help clients explore their 34 themes. To help summarise the information from the 25 pages, several coaches also supply the My 34 Theme Report in Cascade. The one-page visual representations of their theme distribution can add further insights at a glance.

Looking Ahead with Cascade

A lot of work is underway to bring you the next version of Cascade. The aim is to make it more intuitive and easier to use. In addition to the features mentioned last month, here are some more benefits.

  • The Team Grid is stepping up to a new level, offering new features and display options.
  • We are also introducing One Click printing and simplifying the way to create PDFs for individual reports.
  • The Personal Insights page will have an option to show the Metaphors and Barrier Labels.
  • The reports will feature the revised theme and domain descriptions Gallup launched this month.

Most of the new features will only be available with the Bonus Pack. To reflect the additional value of the Bonus Pack, we will be increasing its price by £10 (about $13 or €11) in December. Those already with the Bonus pack do not need to do anything. However, if you don’t yet have the Bonus Pack, now is a good time to get it. Click here for more information.

Would you like to help test the new version of Cascade before the launch? If you have an eye for detail and are able to review some of the new features, please Contact Us.

Testing Cascade on the recently released Office 2019 is not identifying any issues. However, we are noticing some errors with the Mac Mojave release when creating PDFs. See the piece below for details.

Creating PDFs with Mac Mojave

The recent Mojave update for Mac, version 10.14 has new security features. There are additional steps if you want to create PDFs from Cascade to grant permission to the folders. Without these steps, you may experience Error 75 or Error 1004.

See the support article Creating PDFs with Mac Mojave for more information.

Thank you to John, Florence, Emma and Deon for your help in testing and refining the workaround.

Cascade connection theme insights discovery cardsHow do you use the Cascade Spark Chart?

Welcome to the October edition of the Cascade Connection. We take a closer look at the Cascade Spark Chart and explore how it can enhance a workshop. Also, discover what is on the horizon for Cascade with new time-saving features.

Spark of Inspiration

Cascade spark chart strengthsfinder image graph visualThe Cascade Spark Chart visually represents the shape of a team. All the 34 CliftonStrengths® themes sit on the outside of the circle, in quadrants of the four domains. The longer the sparkline, the more people in the team have that theme.

The Spark Chart shows the intensity and distribution of the themes individually and by Domain. Comparing the Spark Charts from several teams can reveal how they differ. In addition to the theme distribution across the Domains; one team may have a wide spread of themes – lots of short lines – while another may have very specific dominant themes – a few long lines.

The Cascade Spark Chart is available as a report on it own or with the Bonus Pack, it is part of the Team Summary report. Depending on the choice in the Team Grid, the Spark Chart will show the top 5 or top 10 themes for the team.

Following the Spark Chart concept, there is a Personal Spark for an individual in the My 34 report.

Four Needs of Followers

As the executive director of ASSP, Jennifer McNelly, a Gallup-certified coach, is leveraging Cascade to better engage staff, volunteer leaders and her Board of Directors. It all starts with understanding the needs of followers and Cascade helps communicate those needs.

‘Just off a week of Leadership Development anchored in Strengths and wanted to share a few visuals I shared with my Board from Cascade. After the initial session, I leveraged Cascade to help them understand that leadership is a two-way street. To lead, you need followers, including staff. The visual when just looking at themselves helped to identify their needs. When I switched to talk about the needs of followers, a member of the Board had their “Ah Ha” moment on the connection between their role and staff. It was super cool!’

Cascade Spark Chart compare team strengths Gallup strengthsfinder

In addition, there is the ‘Leadership’ worksheet in the Theme Advantage page of Cascade. It helps leaders see how they can use their themes to their advantage when providing the four needs of followers. Trust, Stability, Compassion and Hope.

Looking Ahead with Cascade

Over 500 coaches across 39 different countries are now benefiting from Cascade. As the Cascade Community grows, we appreciate all your support and feedback.

Responding to your ideas and comments, we have lots to offer in the months ahead.

  • To simplify navigation, we are creating a new Home screen that will provide a central dashboard to drive all the report pages. It will have a fresher look and be more intuitive for ease of use. Several new timesaving features will help streamline the production of the reports.
  • The reports will be easier to print for Top 5, Top 10 or Top 15 themes. Multiple page reports will appear in one PDF file or can be printed on both sides of the paper.
  • We are in the final negotiations with Gallup to offer the Cascade reports in alternative languages. This will include French (European), Spanish (European) and Spanish (Latin American).

As you would expect, all these new features require quite a bit of technical development. We are beavering away to hopefully release the new version by the end of the year.

We are also continuing to test Cascade on Office 2019, released in September. So far the results are looking promising.

Cascade Support Hub

Last month we launched the Support hub with answers to many of your questions. We will build on this to include sections for each of the report pages. The aim is for you to find answers to issues and discover useful features. There is a search box in the right sidebar to quickly find the right information.

Personal Insights Report

Cascade strengths finder theme insights Gallup discovery cards One of the popular individual reports is the Personal Insights page. Reproduced under our License Agreement with Gallup, it contains the information from the Theme Insight and Theme Discovery cards. Gathering the content for a person’s top 5 themes, it creates a powerful one-page summary. This is an excellent takeaway after a workshop or coaching session.

Some coaches laminate the Personal Insights and the Bring / Need reports back to back, making a longer lasting memento.

Increase Connection

Brenda Bernstof from Tennessee, USA describes how she uses the Personal Insight report.

I use the theme insights to help people really connect with their dominant themes. As they work through the descriptive words, what each theme will be – internally, what each theme does – action-oriented, the value they bring, the needs they have to function really well in that theme, the motivators, and demotivators, they identify themselves very well with that theme and begin to understand why some things are important to them and others are not. They can see why they are who they are and why they do what they do.

The Theme Comparisons on the insight page are very useful to clarify differences between themes – not that one is right and the other is wrong – they simply clarify differences in a comparative theme.’

Power Paragraph

Karen Weigel from Cultivate 2 Conquer in Alexandria MN, USA writes.

In Cascade, there is a snapshot of Strengths [Personal Insights report] you can use for each client. That snapshot has columns for descriptive words, the role I play, the value I bring, who I am, what I bring…etc. I make my clients do a Power Paragraph about themselves using those descriptive words from their snapshot. It’s super awesome!!

So for example, my top 5 strengths are Positivity, Empathy, Activator, Relator & Developer. My power paragraph looks like this:

Power Paragraph Karin Weigel

Have them do a paragraph now, then at your next session have them do a new one! Each time the paragraph gets bigger and more descriptive as they learn more about their special strengths in motion!!

I tell them to OWN their awesomeness!! They really love the exercise. We rarely tell ourselves how awesome we are!’

Feedback from Karin’s clients include

We rarely think about ourselves in terms of strengths and what we bring to a team! This is amazing insight! Not only for us individually but collectively!
Thank you for making us do this exercise and having us OWN our uniqueness!
I am framing this and putting in my kitchen so my family knows what a Rock Star I am!
From a Manager: ‘The way you describe and see yourselves is powerful and insightful and these will be posted in our gathering room!

Cascade Support Hub

Cascade strengths support help questions answers FAQ KBIn response to the number of questions arriving about Cascade, we are launching a Support hub with a host of helpful information. Divided into sections, there are answers to questions like;

Will Cascade run on my Computer?
How can I import themes from the Gallup Strengths Center?
Can I insert a report into PowerPoint?
How can I email people with a certain theme?

Do make use of the information available and let us know what other questions you would like us to cover. In time we will delve into some of the more complicated pages in Cascade to help you make the most of the features. The Support Hub replaces the previous Q&A page of the website.

Receiving Cascade Updates

As the number of people using Cascade nears 500, we need to find more stable and efficient ways to distribute the updates.

Previously, we sent the Cascade file out as a bulky email attachment. Increasingly, the emails found themselves in the Junk folder or were blocked completely by corporate firewalls. To create a more reliable service, we are now sending out links which will download the Cascade file. You will be able to click on the link and save the Cascade file to your computer. What is more, the name of the link will not change, so when there is an update to Cascade, you can click on the same link to receive the latest file.

Common Questions

Talking to the Cascade Community, a couple of questions are frequently emerging.

Should I put all my clients in one copy of Cascade?

One early question when setting out with Cascade is how to store the themes for different groups of people.

Some coaches use a new copy of Cascade for each organisation. Apart from creating lots of Cascade files, this can get messy when there is a software update. We recommend where possible to store all your clients or staff in one copy of Cascade.

The Theme Table page has four columns (A-D) on the left to categorise your clients. You can rename the headings and use the columns to suit your client base or company. Think about how you want to group your clients together when creating reports. You can use the organisation name, the team or the workshop session etc.

In the Team page, use these categories to select the people for the Team Grid.

See the Theme Table page for more information.

Why are new clients not appearing in the reports?

Another common question occurs when adding a new person. Their themes are in the Theme Table but their name does not appear in the drop-down lists for the reports.

Cascade issue 7 QuestionsThe Team page defines the list of people for the reports. Use the Team Grid to select the organisation or team, then all the other reports will represent those people. The drop-down lists for the individual reports refer to the names on the Team Grid.

After adding a new person to the Theme Table, make sure you can see them in the Team Grid, then they will appear in the drop-down lists for the other reports.

When leaving the Team page, there is a process to regenerate the list of names for the reports. It is therefore important to view the Team page after adding people to the Theme Table.

See Getting Started for more information.

Tip: The Theme Table has two columns for the email address and Date (columns I and J). These are only present in Cascade as the columns exist in the Gallup export file. You do not need to manually enter information here as it is not used elsewhere in Cascade. Feel free to use this space for any additional information or notes.

Gallup’s Q12 assessment captures the level of engagement with 12 key questions. It is a useful benchmark to run before and after a strengths-based program to measure the effectiveness of the program. When setting up the Q12 assessment, the Group Reporting feature filters the results by additional factors. These can be by Team, Generation, Location, Part Time / Full Time, Volunteer / Paid etc.
Gallup Q12 engagement survey Cascade

from Sydney, adds a new dimension to Cascade with Q12. He writes.

“If you use Q12 and Strengths, then you may find this approach useful.
I use Group Reporting in Q12 e.g. By Team, By Role, By Generation, By Location etc. Then I use Cascade to mirror these Groups using Columns A-D in the Theme Table Tab to align to the Q12 Groups. I then pull the Team Grid and Team Summary for each of these Groups. Now you have an engagement view by Groups and a Strengths view by Group.

In addition, I then take the Team’s Top 5 and create them as a Person in the Theme Table – this then allows me to pull a Personal Insights view of the Team as a whole.”

This is a great example of bringing the tools together to enhance the outcome. How do you use Cascade with other assessments or tools?

Cascade Connection – Issue 6

Cascade Connection – Issue 6

Welcome to a special July edition of the Cascade Connection. We launch the new version of Cascade with two brand new reports and a massive time-saving feature. If you read all the way down to the bottom, you’ll find another gem.
We also look forward to meeting many of you at the Clifton Strengths Summit in Omaha.

Cascade Just Gets Better!

Cascade connection news letter tips help advice support community

The new version of Cascade is now available with three major new features.

  • A new report visually displaying all 34 themes for an individual.
  • A new worksheet to help clients take advantage of their themes in different situations.
  • The ability to create PDF reports for a whole team in just a few moments.
Read on to find out more.
My 34 Themes

Cascade My 34 theme report strengthsfinder chartAs Gallup is making it easier to access all 34 themes, we put together a special report to help with these coaching conversations.  The My 34 report shows all 34 themes for a person with their own Spark chart and domain Pie chart.

Adjusting the number of dominant themes tailors the report for your client. You can also choose which Theme Insight information you want to include.

Under the terms of our Licence Agreement, we a have worked with Gallup to produce the approved report. You will need the Bonus Pack to see the My 34 report in Cascade.  More Info

Fiona Grant is a leadership coach near Washington D.C. who has worked with Strengths since 2007. She writes
“I used the new My 34 page with two very different clients and was pleased to see how meaningful the summary was for each person. I used the ‘Being & Doing’ view with one, and the ‘Motivators/Demotivators’ view with another. They thought their summaries were both cool and insightful. The client with Communication as his #1 theme liked it so much he forwarded his along to his boss and suggested they consider a team workshop. Cascade is becoming an excellent sales asset for my business —  the one-page summaries are perfect for showing executives the value of the Strengths framework.”

Theme Advantage

Cascade strengths theme advantage report grid strengthsfinder matrixThere are lots of management models and theories to increase understanding of situations. Helping your client take advantage of their themes for each stage of a process will give them the edge. The new Theme Advantage page shows the client’s themes and the steps of a process on a grid. Exploring how their themes can contribute to each step will open up new opportunities. This is very much a worksheet to help start a potentially difficult conversation.

The standard version of Cascade includes various productivity areas which parallel with the four domains. The Bonus Pack opens up Leadership models and Project Management concepts.

We welcome feedback on this new worksheet and will add more models in future releases.  More Info

Florence Hardy is a Strengths coach and facilitator near Paris, France. She writes
“Wow impressed after my 30 mins exploring and testing this morning. LOVE, love, love the advantage page!!!! it’s like the Return of the Jedi for me (aka – the return of the theme map, in a much more mature version). Love it. Will apply to myself “How to get things done” lol.”

Create Multiple PDF Reports for a Team

Cascade PDF strengthsfinder reports team email zipMany coaches create PDF reports in Cascade for their clients. Whilst this is fine on an individual basis, creating 10’s of PDF documents for a team is very time-consuming. After months of research and coding, we have automated the bulk creation of PDF reports. You can now rattle off a set of personalised PDF reports for a whole team. During our testing, we created over 200 PDF documents in just a few minutes. You can quickly Zip up the files and email them to your customer.

Technical issues limit this feature to Windows with Office 2010, 2013, 2016 and Mac with Office 2016. It will not run on Mac with Office 2011.

As you may expect, this massive timesaving feature requires the Bonus Pack. More Info

Lisa Cummings an international strengths evangelist from Texas writes
“All I have to say is W00t!!! This is fantastic. I created Personal Insights Reports and Bring-Need Reports PDF for 68 people in under 5 minutes. This saves me from printing hundreds of pages. And it gives clients a handy digital file to refer back to long after our training.

Most of all, it allows me to stop travelling with carry-on bags that weigh 100 lbs. This might seem like a small thing, yet after getting stopped by security several times for “large bricks of organic matter” (my stacks of paper that must appear like cocaine in the scanners), I’m not so keen on being seen as a drug smuggler 😉 Not to mention, a few helpful people have grabbed my bag and put it in the overhead bin. After feeling the ridiculous weight from the paper, people love to ask, “Wow that’s heavy. Is there a dead body in there?” Richard, you have saved me from a perceived life of crime. All with your automated PDF function for Mac users. You’re a gem.”

Thank you

Creating new reports and testing the new features is a team effort. We want to thank you for your suggestions, ideas and time spent reviewing and checking the new version of Cascade. This is very much the Cascade Community in action. Thank you to Alicia Santamaria, Barry Rellaford, Brea Roper, Charlotte Blair, Cheryl Pace, Deon Rademeyer, Elaine Krek, Fiona Grant, Florence Hardy, Jessica Kennedy, Jennifer Miller, Jose Valcarcel, Kathie Gautille, Liz Ellis, Mary Beth Crawford, Ralph Rickenbach and Tracy Phillips.

Cascade Connection – Issue 5

Cascade Connection – Issue 5

Cascade connection news letter tips help advice support communityWelcome to the June edition of Cascade Connection. A warm welcome if you recently joined the Cascade Community, especially if you are still deciding whether to use Cascade. I hope you all find something here of interest.
As Gallup is making it easier for clients to access their full 34 theme sequence, we show how Cascade can assist these coaching conversations. We also look at some of the new features planned for the next release of Cascade.

June 2018

All 34 Theme Report

Coaching conversations initially focus on the top 5 themes. Revealing all 34 themes provides deeper insights and a greater perspective. Using the All 34 Report in Cascade you can see the full 34 theme sequences side by side for a team.

Cascade Strengths All 34 theme report Gallup strengthsfinderPlay with the display options to find a view that works best for you. Try selecting the ‘Top 10 and Bottom 5’ themes to create a cleaner page, it hides the supporting themes in the middle. Viewing the themes beyond the Top 5 requires the Bonus Pack.

Theme Identification
Use the yellow selection boxes on the right of the page to choose which themes to identify. This will pick out a particular theme across the people on the page. You may notice some themes of similarity and contrast amongst the team members. These observations can be good conversation starters.

Tip: Under each person’s name is a small radio button. Click on this button for one person then press the Identify Top 5 button. A box appears around the Top 5 themes for that person, along with those same themes for everyone else.

If there are more than six people in the team, change the names and print out another report.

Coaching with the All 34 Theme Report

Charlotte Blair from Australia, who is presenting a session at this year’s Summit, shares her experience with the All 34 theme report.

“I have used the 34 tab for a number of different groups to date. Where I find it the most effective is with Executive Teams. Recently I used it to show an Exec team of 8 to show their collective Full 34 talents and in this instance where the Responsibility® lay collectively for them (which was Top 10 for 6/8 of them) it was useful for them to think about how this might be seen or experienced by others, where it Helps and where it might Hinder.

I really like the fact that the full 34 are shown in their domain colours which helps participants easily see where they sit in the 4 domains, something that is not shown in the Gallup theme sequence report.  I find it so handy that I can choose Top 10 and bottom 5 as well as full 34.  Showing Top 10 and bottom 5 has been valuable with another exec team who were very high in Competition® and Command® but low in Empathy® and Harmony® except for one.  This again was a simple visual representation that lead to deeper discussions.

All 34 strengths theme sequence Charlotte Blair Cascade Report

Another way I use it is when Pairing people off.  In a group of 10 this week I have created a double-sided sheet with all 10 participants full 34 but purposely shown them next to each other with some contrasting people and themes so they can see where they think, feel and behave so differently to each other.”

I like the way Charlotte pairs people together with contrasting themes for a greater impact. This technique can also work well with the Team Profiles report.

Strengths Twins and Beyond

The Strengths Twins registrations are very popular at the moment. As a result, we are pairing more people together who share the same Top 5 themes. One group now has seven members, forming Strengths Septuplets. Interestingly, all the themes for this group are in the Strategic Thinking domain.

Yesterday at the Gallup Alumni in London, I met a pair of Strengths Twins who were connected via the website. They had instantly clicked and are loving their new friendship.

What’s Next with Cascade?

Listening to your comments and identifying opportunities, Cascade continues to strive forward. The next release of Cascade will feature three major enhancements.

  • Create personalised PDF reports for each person in a team with just a few clicks. (This feature will require Excel 2016 for Windows or Mac).
  • Dig deeper with all 34 themes. A new report showing all 34 themes for an individual with theme insights and a personal Spark Chart.
  • Create specific worksheets for coaching sessions. Help clients see how they can apply their themes across the domains and in given situations such as; Leadership, Change, Decision Making, Project Management etc.

We plan to release these improvements along with other minor tweaks early in July. Some of the features will only be available with the Bonus Pack.

2018 Summit

In July I will be at the Summit in Omaha. It will be great to meet as many of you as possible, either on the Sunday and Monday beforehand or at the event itself.

Thank you to those who listened live for your support, it was a wonderful experience. We covered the Strengths Twins initiative and the benefits of finding someone who shares the same top 5 themes.

I Bring / I Need Report

Cascade bring need report strengthsfinder theme contributions Exploring the wider dimensions of the themes, the I Bring / I Need report in Cascade provides deeper insights. It can help people resonate with their themes and take them to new levels of understanding.

The contributions on the left of the page provide a range of aspects which the theme brings. These can be real confidence boosters, empowering people to ‘own’ their theme. The Learner® theme includes ‘Courage when venturing into the unknown’ which helped me enormously when I left full-time employment and set up my own business.

On the right is a list of the energisers supplying the needs of the theme. Help your client interpret these into relevant activities. For example, my Relator® needs ‘Opportunities for one on one interactions’. I therefore feed my Relator theme by scheduling several online chats and having coffees with friends.

Providing the needs for the themes will increase motivation and enable the theme to thrive. As a manager, this report for each person in the team is like gold dust. If they focus on providing the needs of their staff, the contributions will follow.

Karen Weigel from Cultivate 2 Conquer in Alexandria MN, US writes.

“I use Bring/Need as a learning tool when talking to clients about balconies and basements. It is a valuable tool in teaching them how to turn up, or turn down their strengths, depending on their audience!

In a team setting, we focus first on the BRING side. The team members pick a strength they love and then share what greatness they BRING to the table. The BRING portion drives home each member’s excellence, what makes them a rock star, what beautiful unique value they add. I make them form a complete sentence that encompasses what makes them unique and special.

Then we move to the NEED portion. In a team setting, we focus on each person’s role in the team and how what they NEED is an important part of them using their strengths most effectively. When the team knows what each member needs, they begin to understand their HOW. The Need portion is what we use for examples of how someone’s actions may be mistakenly devalued, misinterpreted, or viewed as a weakness. The discussions around this are magnificent, they sometimes share an irritant, that now knowing the NEED, has resolved. Or they learn a new area where they can use someone more productively, where their talents would shine more brightly based on that individual’s NEEDS.

The BRING represents the balconies and the NEED represents basements (meaning that they can be misinterpreted).”

Labels & Lanyards

StrengthsFinder theme print name tags badge lanyard labels cascade spreadsheetWorkshops and seminars are not complete without name badges or lanyards. They increase your professionalism and provide a corporate identity. The Labels page in Cascade can print a wide range of labels to suit a variety of templates. Create a one page Top 5 certificate, two corporate lanyards or up to 16 badge labels on a page.

Design the header and footer to top and tail the participant’s name and their top 5 themes. Once set up there is no mailmerging required, you can print directly from Cascade.

A recent enhancement in Cascade version 2.0r01d increases the label combinations on each page. There can now be 1 or 2 labels across and up to 8 labels going down the page. The Bonus Pack enables a feature to hide the surname for more informal workshops. It can also add a team name to the footer of the label, which is helpful when dividing the participants into groups.

More information to create your own labels is available here. Some of the set up can be a bit tricky. Focus on the paper size and label dimensions before designing the format for each label. If you get stuck or need help, please contact us.

Marie-Hélène Langlois at RCP | Coaching | Conseils RH in Canada writes.

Marie Helene Name Frame top 5 strengths themes

“The Labels page really helped us making our personalized picture frames and name tags for our workshops. This feature in Cascade made it much easier and faster for us to prepare for small and large groups, compared to what we used before.
The content generates itself from the main page, and we only need to enter the measurements once, which saves us precious time, every time!!”
