Launching under a license with Gallup in January 2018, you responded enthusiastically telling your friends about the Cascade strengths reports. Word is quickly spreading to help other coaches benefit from the visual charts and time-saving features.

As Cascade becomes an everyday tool in the Strengths world, it is an honour to see the reports in conversations, social sites, podcasts and seminars. Here are a few of the highlights from 2018.

Appearing on Called to Coach in May was quite an experience. Thank you to Jim Collison and his team for being the perfect host. We talked about strengths in a church environment, Strengths Twins and saw a demo of Cascade. It is amazing how many people are watching the replay and contacting us, several months later.

Sharing my strengths story in a podcast with Becky Hammond was an enjoyable moment. Describing my journey to find a coach, I revealed the incredible impact of that first strengths-based conversation.

Meeting so many coaches at the Clifton Strengths Summit in July was a wonderful opportunity. With over 100 Cascade advocates, it felt like a real community. You are so much better in person and it was nice to hear your individual stories.

New Reports

Cascade My 34 theme report strengthsfinder chartOver the summer we saw the arrival of the new My 34 Theme report, a one page summary of all 34 themes for a person. Also, the new Theme Advantage worksheet, helping clients take advantage of their themes in various situations.

The feature to create a batch of PDF reports for clients is proving immensely popular and a big bonus for your clients.

Towards the end of the year, we launched new services to help coaches. Whether you just have the PDF Gallup reports or a Team Grid from Gallup Access, we can read these and extract the theme information to drop into Cascade.

Strengths Twins

Clifton Strengths Twins Gallup StrengthsFinder same top 5 themesTicking away in the background is a constant stream of people searching to find their Strengths Twin. Matching individuals every week who share the same top 5 themes is a real privilege. So far, over 260 people have found their ‘Twin’ across 56 different countries. There are Triplets, Quads, a group of Quins and one collection of 11 people sharing the same top 5 themes. We also have 5 pairs who share the same top 5 themes in the same order.

Reflection

What has made 2018 so good? There are a couple of things I have learned in 2018, one is to follow your gut and the other is to embrace the community around you. Be true to your instincts and draw on the expertise and strengths of others. Sharing an African proverb at my daughter’s wedding earlier this year, it says. “Alone I go fast, together we go far.”

Looking forward

Listening to your comments and feedback we have great plans for Cascade. A new version, due out early in 2019, it is more intuitive and easier to use. The reports cover a greater range of themes, there are more options and there is simple one-click printing. Just wait until you see the new Team Grid!

As the Cascade Community grows beyond 600 advocates across 40 countries worldwide, you are all part of something special. Thank you for your support and enthusiasm to share the Cascade word. It is an honour to have so many friends and companions all over the globe.

I look forward to the Clifton Strengths Summit in June 2019 where we can continue to build the strengths movement.

In the meantime have a very Happy Holiday, Happy Chrismas or whatever you say when celebrating this special seasonal time.

Cascade connection news letter tips help advice support communityWelcome to the June edition of Cascade Connection. A warm welcome if you recently joined the Cascade Community, especially if you are still deciding whether to use Cascade. I hope you all find something here of interest.
As Gallup is making it easier for clients to access their full 34 theme sequence, we show how Cascade can assist these coaching conversations. We also look at some of the new features planned for the next release of Cascade.

All 34 Theme Report

Coaching conversations initially focus on the top 5 themes. Revealing all 34 themes provides deeper insights and a greater perspective. Using the All 34 Report in Cascade you can see the full 34 theme sequences side by side for a team.

Try selecting the ‘Top 10 and Bottom 5’ themes to create a cleaner page, it hides the supporting themes in the middle. Viewing the themes beyond the Top 5 requires the Bonus Pack.

Theme Identification
Use the yellow selection boxes on the right of the page to choose which themes to identify. This will pick out a particular theme across the people on the page. You may notice some themes of similarity and contrast amongst the team members. These observations can be good conversation starters.

Tip: Under each person’s name is a small radio button. Click on this button for one person then press the Identify Top 5 button. A box appears around the Top 5 themes for that person, along with those same themes for everyone else.

If there are more than six people in the team, change the names and print out another report.

Coaching with the All 34 Theme Report

Charlotte Blair from Australia, who is presenting a session at this year’s Summit, shares her experience with the All 34 theme report.

“I have used the 34 tab for a number of different groups to date. Where I find it the most effective is with Executive Teams. Recently I used it to show an Exec team of 8 to show their collective Full 34 talents and in this instance where the Responsibility® lay collectively for them (which was Top 10 for 6/8 of them) it was useful for them to think about how this might be seen or experienced by others, where it Helps and where it might Hinder.

I really like the fact that the full 34 are shown in their domain colours which helps participants easily see where they sit in the 4 domains, something that is not shown in the Gallup theme sequence report.  I find it so handy that I can choose Top 10 and bottom 5 as well as full 34.  Showing Top 10 and bottom 5 has been valuable with another exec team who were very high in Competition® and Command® but low in Empathy® and Harmony® except for one.  This again was a simple visual representation that lead to deeper discussions.

Another way I use it is when Pairing people off.  In a group of 10 this week I have created a double-sided sheet with all 10 participants full 34 but purposely shown them next to each other with some contrasting people and themes so they can see where they think, feel and behave so differently to each other.”

I like the way Charlotte pairs people together with contrasting themes for a greater impact. This technique can also work well with the Team Profiles report.

Strengths Twins and Beyond

The Strengths Twins registrations are very popular at the moment. As a result, we are pairing more people together who share the same Top 5 themes. One group now has seven members, forming Strengths Septuplets. Interestingly, all the themes for this group are in the Strategic Thinking domain.

Yesterday at the Gallup Alumni in London, I met a pair of Strengths Twins who were connected via the website. They had instantly clicked and are loving their new friendship.

What’s Next with Cascade?

Listening to your comments and identifying opportunities, Cascade continues to strive forward. The next release of Cascade will feature three major enhancements.

  • Create personalised PDF reports for each person in a team with just a few clicks. (This feature will require Excel 2016 for Windows or Mac).
  • Dig deeper with all 34 themes. A new report showing all 34 themes for an individual with theme insights and a personal Spark Chart.
  • Create specific worksheets for coaching sessions. Help clients see how they can apply their themes across the domains and in given situations such as; Leadership, Change, Decision Making, Project Management etc.

We plan to release these improvements along with other minor tweaks early in July. Some of the features will only be available with the Bonus Pack.

2018 Summit

In July I will be at the Summit in Omaha. It will be great to meet as many of you as possible, either on the Sunday and Monday beforehand or at the event itself.

Here we look at a report to enhance conversations about collaboration and overcoming conflict. We see what is happening with the Strengths Twins and we also share a special event on 1st May.

The Power of 2

Improving collaboration and resolving conflicts often feature in coaching conversations. Here we discuss some practical steps to help two people increase their effectiveness when working together.

The Power of 2 worksheet in Cascade is a simple matrix with one person’s themes across the top and another person’s themes down the side.

The points of discussion come at the intersection of the two themes. Explore how the themes can enhance each other so together they can make the result exceptional. It is a bit like 1 + 1 = 11. The online book Expanding Your Strengths provides suggestions for powerful partnerships.

Conversely, how can the two themes rub against each other and appear to be pulling in opposite directions? It is all about appreciating the differences each theme can bring. Consider the intensity of each theme relative to the specific situation.

This concept can help a manager understand each person in their team better. Outside the workplace, share this with a married couple to help strengthen their relationship.

Facilitating Conversations

Alicia Santamaria, a conflict resolution expert in San-Francisco writes “There have been times in my coaching and team facilitation, where two people (colleagues or supervisor/direct report) have benefitted from dedicated time talking together about their particular partnership. Cascade’s Power of 2 matrix is a simple but powerful tool to use to structure this strengths-based conversation. Several clients have expressed gratitude for having this resource to help them self-facilitate their partnership conversation. As a result of the conversation and time spent understanding each other’s strengths, they are working even more cohesively together.”

Measuring Effectiveness

Deon Rademeyer from Australia has kindly produced a checklist to identify the effectiveness of a partnership. It helps to highlight the areas working well and what needs to improve. It can also show up an imbalance of understanding between the two people.

Use the review to provide a clear benchmark at the outset of a conversation. Have each person complete the review independently, then compare notes. At the end of the coaching process, use it again to demonstrate a tangible measure of improvement.

Command® vs Harmony®.

Pippa Shaper a Strengths Coach in South Africa shares a recent coaching session with a business owner and his PA. She writes “Amongst the Cascade tools I used with them both was the Power of 2, to help explain how they could celebrate the strengths they shared in common, as well as see the huge possibilities arising from some of their other strengths, which were quite different.

The business owner has Command® as a theme in his top five, whilst his PA has Harmony® and Restorative®. Rather than regarding these particular strengths as strange and foreign in each other, the Power of 2 enabled them to see how Harmony and Restorative can solve problems and settle disagreements within the team when the business owner’s Command could have been a lot blunter and to the point! She was also able to see that the directness of Command could be very useful to take control of a situation when all else had failed to try and smooth things over with consensus.

Through the use of colour on the Power of 2 page, they were both able to see that the ‘boss’, being strong in the Strategic Thinking and Influencing domain, was wonderfully balanced by his PA’s strength in the Executing and Relationship domains. This session gave them both a new appreciation for the other, knowing now what strengths they should be ‘borrowing’ from each other as and when needed.”

Strengths Twins Reach 50

strengths twins top 5 strengthsfinder themes match triplet Last month we matched our 50th pair of Strengths Twins. Two people with the same top 5 themes, in any order. Statistically, the chances are 1 in 278,000.

As more people join the hunt to discover their ‘other self’ the number of pairings increase and new conversations begin.
