How do you describe the Strengths of a Team?

Cascade Connection news - read the highlights of 2021 and how we've made significant steps forward in strengthening the Strengths movement this year

What words do you use to explain the strengths of a team and have you considered how they might help increase collaboration with others?

Often we use emotional words such as close-knit, friendly, or enthusiastic. But how much do these really help those who want to engage with the team?

Instead, describe what the team can bring and what it needs to work at its best, this offers a much more powerful insight. The clearer perspective will guide others in how to connect with the team to achieve better results. Cascade is perfectly designed to help you with this.

Team Summary

Cascade team strengths summary

The Team Summary report in Cascade is a one page summary highlighting the strengths of a team. There are several sections, visually showing the distribution of the 34 CliftonStrengths® themes in different ways.

As well as the Theme Frequency Chart and the Domain Pie Chart, you’ll find our Spark Chart. This simple but powerful tool is unique to Cascade.

Cascade Spark Chart

Each of the 34 CliftonStrengths® themes circle the outside of the Spark Chart, in the four quadrants of the four Leadership Domains. The longer the line, the more people in the team have that theme. So it’s a brilliantly visual way of quickly seeing the distribution of strengths across a team.

Cascade team strengths spark chart

The task-oriented Domains – Executing and Strategic Thinking – are at the top of the Spark Chart with the people-centric Domains – Relationship Building and Influencing – at the bottom.

Some teams may have a few long lines showing where there are very dominant strengths; while other teams may have a lot of shorter lines covering many different strengths.

By considering the balance of the themes across the Domains, you can assess the overall strengths or biases of the team.

The Strengths of a Team

At the bottom of the Team Summary are the top 5 themes for the overall team with words to describe each theme. These are specifically designed to help a team to understand and express what it brings, what it needs and how it is motivated.

For example, you can use these phrases to create a purpose statement for the team, or to describe how it best operates. Once shared, this message will also then inform others how best to interact with the team.

Diversity, Equality and Inclusion (DEI)

When considering DEI, you may find that there are some team members who don’t have any of the team’s top themes in their own top 5. As a result, they may feel on the fringe of the team, or like they don’t really belong. However, by exploring two main aspects of their strengths, you can help them feel a more integrated part of the team.

First, identify which themes this team member has that others do not possess. The easiest way to do this is by opening Cascade’s Team Grid, then look for the blue number 1’s in the Theme Totals Bar on row 8.

By highlighting these strengths, you can then help the individual – and their team members – see how their uniqueness benefits the team. Their different perspective will be an invaluable contribution, creating a more balanced team structure, culture and approach.

Overall, the Team Summary report is an excellent conversation piece for a team workshop. It’s so helpful for getting everyone to deliberately consider how the team operates well and what it needs from others.

We also find it’s particularly loved by visual learners and those with an analytical mind, as the graphical insights provide a special perspective of the team. When working with several teams, compare the Team Summary reports for each team. You’ll be amazed at what you may discover!

Thank you for Strengthening the Strengths Movement with us

Cascade Connection news - read the highlights of 2021 and how we've made significant steps forward in strengthening the Strengths movement this year

As 2021 draws to close, and we have the opportunity to reflect back on this unusual year, we wanted to pause and say “thank you”.

Despite the challenges 2021 has thrown at us all, we are proud to have made some significant steps forward in our mission – strengthening the Strengths movement. You, the Cascade Community, have played a big part in that progress. We are truly grateful for your support.

So in this issue, join us to explore the highlights of what we’ve achieved together in 2021, including:

  • New resources you’ve helped shape and are now actively using.
  • Advances made in new topics, such as mindset resilience and psychological safety, and how these are deepening coaching insights and impact.
  • Long-standing reports that continue to help coaches around the world.

We hope you find this round-up inspiring and encouraging – and also helpful in making sure you’re fully equipped with all the resources you need for 2022.

Powerful coaching tools – key new resources in 2021

Strengthening the Strengths Movement through 20 Different Strengths Advantage Worksheets

With our aim of strengthening the Strengths movement, our focus is never static. We’re always working with you to explore new ways to increase coaching effectiveness, both for you and for your clients. For example, we now have over 20 different Strengths Advantage worksheets to help you guide your clients to apply their Strengths successfully in a wide range of scenarios.

Helping you find what you need

We also want to make your life as a coach as simple as possible. So with an ever-expanding list of Cascade tools, we spent some time this summer collating everything together to produce two guides to help you quickly and easily find which resources you need. We’d suggest bookmarking these for frequent reference!

A good place to start

If you’re still quite new to Cascade – or in need of a refresher – we also created a Getting Started video this year. In it, Cascade founder Richard talks through how to use Cascade and its main features.

Personal is best

Finally, we’ve had lots of positive feedback on a recent new feature in Cascade that allows you to write your own title text at the top of a report. It’s such a simple thing! But it’s amazing how making a report more personal to better match a client’s situation makes the world of difference. Discover more here.

Digging deeper into well-being topics

In a year full of challenges, there’s rightly been a deepening focus on well-being across the coaching community and beyond. So in response, we’ve developed new resources to help us all expand our understanding of well-being topics through the power of Strengths.

Psychological Safety
One area we've worked on in 2021 to further our aim of strengthening the Strengths movement is Psychological Safety

One big area of interest has been Psychological Safety. Particularly how to nurture it in workplace environments to improve team health and performance. So one of our most important areas of progress this year has been the creation of a Psychological Safety Strengths Advantage worksheet. We were thrilled to do this in collaboration with several coaches qualified in the topic and to get the endorsement of LeaderFactor to base the resource on their model of the 4 Stages of Psychological Safety.

Check out our blog with more background info on this topic. You’ll discover how combining it with Strengths can really help you understand what’s needed to create a safe environment.

Mindset resilience
Our new resource on Mindset Resilience has also helped us in our mission of strengthening the Strengths movement

The second big highlight for us under this wide topic of well-being was the development of a new resource on mindset resilience. Again, something much needed in these current times. We created this new Strengths Advance worksheet jointly with Laura Everest, whose own story of finding mental toughness after tragedy is truly inspirational.

Read our blog on Laura’s story, and explore how her experiences and the new resource will help you widen your coaching offering.

Much-loved reports still going strong

In a survey of our Facebook group earlier this year, we were fascinated to discover the most popular Cascade resource. The result? The Brings & Needs Report!

The Power of 2 report is another favourite among the Cascade Community

By unpacking what each of a client’s top 5 themes “brings” and “needs”, this report provides a brilliant insight into how they thrive. It’s unique to Cascade. So definitely add it to your coaching arsenal if you haven’t already!

We’ve also enhanced another popular resource – The Power of 2 – to encompass The Power of Me. Again, this report provides powerful new insights for your clients in how their themes blend to make them uniquely equipped.

It’s also great for creating personal statements as the report provides key theme phrases that can be combined. With endless combinations, you and your clients can pick phrases that resonate best and will be the most helpful for them to lean into going forwards.

Strengths Bring Need Cascade popular report

Intrigued to know which Cascade resource is most helpful, we recently asked our Facebook group members.

The most popular answer was The Brings & Needs Report. The simple and invaluable document highlights 5 themes per page, describing what each one brings and what it needs to thrive.

This report is unique to Cascade. It helps both coaches and clients quickly understand the breadth of their themes.

It can also be a real time-saver. For example, have you ever prepared a workshop session and arrived to discover that one person hasn’t read any of their CliftonStrengths® assessment reports?! The Brings and Needs Report provides a brilliant, quick overview of their themes so they can still participate in your session.

Are you New? Welcome to the Cascade Community!

Global Cascade Community Cliftonstrengths strengths finder
Cascade’s global coaching community

The Cascade Community continues to grow rapidly. There are now thousands of coaches from more than 60 countries worldwide benefiting from the Cascade reports. We especially love welcoming new members. So we’re thrilled to have you join our global coaching community!

To help those new to Cascade – or as a reminder for those who aren’t so new – here are a few pointers to help you find and use the resources you need…

Getting Started

A nice and easy way to understand Cascade is to watch our Getting Started video. It’ll show you how to set up Cascade, import your themes from Gallup, create reports and more.

Which Report to Use and When?

With so many Cascade resources now available, you could find the options a bit overwhelming. So we recently published two new guides – one for individual coaching; and one for team or management level coaching. Each guide identifies a variety of coaching situations and recommends a suitable Cascade report to use in each scenario:

Making the Most of the Theme Table

One of the biggest tips we give new users is to save all your clients or staff in one copy of Cascade whenever possible. This gives you the greatest flexibility going forwards. Plus it makes things simpler when there’s a new Cascade version.

Once you’ve added your contacts, use the blue left-hand columns in the Theme Table to identify the company, team, cohort or workshop session etc you want. Then you can select just that group in the Team Grid to filter their names.

After adding people to the Theme Table, click on the Reset Formatting button. Then in the Team Grid, click on the Refresh Page button. These two steps will help the rest of Cascade run smoothly.

To remove someone from the Theme Table, highlight their name and themes, then press the Delete key. Click on the blue A/Z sort button in column G to move the empty row to the bottom of the table.

PDF Troubleshooting

When creating PDF reports, most initial errors are fixed by checking the Folder Path in the Settings section of the Cascade Menu. Click on Insert Path, then Test Path. In Windows, make sure the path starts with C:\… and not http:\\…

Help with the Reports

Cascade website help

At the top of the Cascade pages, you can find options to adjust the report and select the number of themes to show. For help with any of the reports, click on the green ? to see our dedicated web page for that report.

Need more Help?

  • We have a comprehensive online Support Section. Here you’ll find a wide range of articles giving help and guidance on specific topics. Check this out first to quickly access the answers you need.
  • If you’re still stuck, we’d love to help you get sorted. Use the Contact Us form to request assistance. If we can’t help you with a simple email reply, we offer the opportunity to connect via Zoom to guide you personally.

What’s Coming Next with Cascade?

We are continually investing to improve and develop Cascade in response to your feedback, the needs of the Strengths coaching environment, and technological advances.

This is a heads-up that we are currently working away behind the scenes with other coaches, getting a new update ready for you. We’re hoping to release it in late September. We think it’ll add a bit more sparkle to your coaching offering! 😊

For example, we’re making changes that will enable you to make the individual reports even more personal for your clients. Plus adding a new Strengths Advantage worksheet on the topic of deepening team trust and collaboration.

We’ll be sharing more information about this new Cascade release at the end of September.
